First held in 1866 by the American Turners as the Turnlehrer Seminar for the purpose of training physical education instructors. The seminar was incorporated as the Normal College of the North American Gymnastics Union (later American Gymnastics Union) in 1907 when the school was permanently transferred to Indianapolis.
